ARTIST STATEMENT "Reflections From the Dark Side of the Moon" is a book of my Uncle Steve’s poetry, published posthumously, after his passing in 2021, following a hard-fought struggle with a rare form of cancer.

The writings which it contains offer glimpses into his lived experience of the world around him and the interior world of his thoughts and philosophies. There are poems about his childhood, his travels, his values, and his joys. There are also poems about his pain, his struggles, and the difficulty of facing death.

It represents the full spectrum of his life. Before his passing, I was honored to be asked by him to contribute drawings to accompany some of the poems in his book. With a background primarily in graphic design, and some forays into abstract sculpture, illustrating poems in pen and ink was a stretch for me artistically. We spent months talking through concepts, reviewing sketches, and working towards the finished drawings. This is the first time I have shown the original drawings to the public.

I hope that through his words and my drawings, you can get to know Dr. Stephen Guinn just a bit, and be inspired to look at the world and humanity with reverence and a desire to learn and explore.

I dedicate this show to my Uncle Steve, my Aunt Kathi, my cousin Shanan, and my father Mike.
