Cyndi Gusler holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing. She is the Director of Visual Arts at Eastern Mennonite University in VA where she shares her love of immersion into these mediums with her students.

Currently in her Chestnut Art Studio are oil and acrylic paintings combining Cyndi's physical environment with her imagined reality.  Barefoot is an evolving playground of land and seascapes that originate from the artist's physical vantage point. The movements of brush on canvas imitate the dance of sunlight sparkling between willow whips on a breezy day. The creative process pulls these paintings in unexpected directions resulting in environments that invite the viewer to enter and explore where her never-ending wanderlust leads.

Materiality is always in question as Cyndi explores the potential of materials to become "paint".  Pulling substances such as used coffee grounds from the waste stream and re-appropriating them as drawing mediums is an integral part of the process and content of her ephemeral artwork. While physically short-lived, these drawings hold potency in the memory of the viewer.

Sinking her hands into the textural wonder of it all, Cyndi explores the potential for materials to be transformed into their most alluring form.
