ARTIST STATEMENT Amberlee Carlson found her way to Harrisonburg through JMU where she earned her bachelor's in English with minors in art & secondary education. After graduating, her & Zach were married, she started her teaching career at Montevideo Middle School, and they bought a house to begin planting roots in the town they fell in love with.

6 years after graduating and getting married, Zach and Amberlee opened Sage Bird Ciderworks, and Amberlee has just retired from teaching to go full-time working in events & marketing with Sage Bird.

Throughout the last 7 years, Amberlee has transformed her passion for words into art through hand-lettering & watercolor. During the pandemic, she spent most mornings painting and exploring abstract shapes, brush technique, and painting just to paint. This exhibition is what has come from those quiet mornings of painting. She aims to capture the looseness of shapes, the flow of colors, and the balance of subtle/bold, thick/thin, loose/tight; how shapes can come together to create meaning out of nothing.
