Artist Statement: 

you’re my favorite is a collection block prints, a celebration of flowers and birthdays and the preciousness of every individual; the beauty of every flower, every person, being one of a kind.

Each image is the result of much dreaming and researching, and bunches of sketches. Once I’ve settled on the composition, I carve the design in linoleum— and with carving, there is no erasing! I love the obsession in the planning, and I love the letting go when it’s time to carve. And no matter how much I plan, the first print is always a surprise. It is the mirror image of what I’ve drawn and carved, and in reverse: what I’ve carved away is of course gone, and the raised areas I’ve left catch the ink which is transferred onto the paper. The imagery I create is my insistence that uncomplicated joy is vital and relevant, an expression of impatient delight.

Throughout my work I explore the meanings and messages of flowers, often using “floriography”, the traditional Victorian language of the flowers. I combine the ornate intentions and messages of this “floriography” with a playful approach and a mid-century inspired style, familiar flower forms rendered in simple stylized shapes.

I celebrate the presence of each person in this time and this place, their uniqueness and the impact they have, simply because they are. My hope is that the viewer feels seen, because connection can make hard spaces feel gentler and life’s joys compounded.
